Updated Travel Guidelines for Ooty Flower Show: E-passes Now Mandatory

Thinking about visiting the Ooty Flower Show? Before you go, take note of the latest travel rules! As per a recent ruling by the Chennai High Court, travelers heading to the Nilgiris district must obtain an e-pass. This measure is designed to regulate tourist influx and safeguard the pristine local surroundings.

Hill Stations Ooty and Kodaikanal Implement Mandatory E-Passes for Visitors

If you’re considering a getaway to Ooty or Kodaikanal, make sure you secure an e-pass beforehand. To regulate tourist influx and preserve the local environment, the Madras High Court has mandated e-passes for all individuals entering the Nilgiris and Dindigul districts. This requirement is effective from May 7th to June 30th, 2024, aligning with the peak tourist season and the commencement of the Ooty Summer Flower Festival on May 10th.

The Tamil Nadu government has introduced a dedicated online platform for obtaining vehicle e-passes. While there is no additional charge for the e-pass itself, the standard entry fee for accessing the Nilgiris district remains applicable.

New Traffic Regulations Impact Ooty Tourism

The charm of Ooty as a tourist destination has faced a setback with the enforcement of new traffic regulations starting May 1st. These measures, introduced to alleviate traffic congestion, have posed challenges for many visitors.

Tour operators are citing the restrictions on vehicle entry as the primary reason behind the decline in tourist numbers. Presently, only light and medium-sized vehicles are permitted entry into Ooty, excluding larger tourist vehicles such as tempos, minibuses, and bigger buses.

Adding to the dilemma is the perceived inadequacy of alternative transportation options provided by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses.

Here’s a breakdown of the new regulations:

  • One-way traffic routes: Vehicles bound for Ooty from Mettupalayam are redirected via Coonoor Road, while those returning must take Kotagiri Road.
  • Time restrictions: Large vehicles are entirely prohibited from entering the town between 6 am and 8 pm.
  • Designated parking: Buses and larger vehicles arriving from Gudalur are directed to park at specified locations such as HPF Road, Golf Club Road, or Coonoor Road near the Aavin Milk Dairy.
  • Limited onward travel: Tourists arriving in these larger vehicles must then rely on TNSTC buses or hire taxis to reach their destinations within Ooty.

These changes have disrupted the tourist flow and presented logistical challenges, resulting in a recent decline in visitor numbers.

Ooty Flower Festival Prepares to Blossom!

The Government Botanical Garden (GBG) in Ooty is bustling with preparations as the flower festival gears up for its grand debut. Established in 1847 during the British colonial era, this sprawling 54-acre sanctuary was once a favored retreat for the colonial elite.

In a bid to enhance visitor experience, Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has allocated Rs 3 crore for upgrading facilities at the GBG. The garden has witnessed a notable increase in footfall in recent months, with over 5.1 lakh visitors flocking in between March and April alone, contributing a revenue of Rs 2.48 crore to the state coffers.

Eager to marvel at the kaleidoscopic floral exhibits? Securing tickets for the flower show is a breeze! Simply visit the horticulture department’s website or opt to purchase them directly at the venue.
