Chembra Peak

Chembra Peak is the highest peak in the Wayanad district of Kerala, India. It is located near Meppady town, about 14 kilometers west of Kalpetta, the district headquarters. Chembra Peak is a prominent tourist attraction known for its breathtaking beauty and trekking opportunities.

At an elevation of approximately 2,100 meters (6,890 feet) above sea level, Chembra Peak offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including the lush green valleys, tea estates, and distant hills. On a clear day, one can even catch a glimpse of the Nilgiri Mountains in the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu.

The main highlight of Chembra Peak is the heart-shaped lake known as Hridaya Saras, which is situated near the summit. This lake is believed to have never dried up and is a major draw for visitors. Trekking to the peak and witnessing the heart-shaped lake is a popular adventure activity for tourists.

To reach the summit of Chembra Peak, visitors must obtain permission from the forest department in Meppady and hire a guide. The trek to the peak involves a moderately challenging trail that passes through dense forests, grasslands, and steep sections. The duration of the trek is approximately 3-4 hours, depending on one’s fitness level.

The trek to Chembra Peak is a memorable experience as it allows trekkers to witness the stunning natural beauty of the Western Ghats. Along the way, one can encounter a variety of flora and fauna, including rare species of birds and butterflies. The cool and refreshing climate of the region adds to the charm of the trek.

It is important to note that due to conservation efforts and maintaining the ecological balance, the forest department limits the number of trekkers to Chembra Peak each day. Therefore, it is advisable to plan the trek in advance and check the availability of permits.

For those who prefer a shorter trek, there is also an option to trek halfway up the peak, which still offers beautiful views of the surroundings.

Chembra Peak is easily accessible by road, and the nearest major town is Kalpetta. The best time to visit and trek to Chembra Peak is during the dry season, which typically spans from December to May, when the weather is pleasant and favorable for trekking.

In summary, Chembra Peak is a scenic and adventurous destination that offers stunning views, an iconic heart-shaped lake, and an exhilarating trekking experience. It is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers exploring the Wayanad region of Kerala.
